What is Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a common medicinal ingredient used in many skin care products. It is also used in a number of over the counter acne treatments, usually in the form of acne cleansing pads or acne astringent cleansers.

Salicylic Acid Acne Products

Salicylic Acid can be found in a wide variety of acne treatment products from acne creams, to acne gels, to astringent acne cleansers. Examples of such acne products are: most and cleansing pads (including oxy, clearasil, noxzema etc.), most astringents (including clean & clear, clearasil), body washes such as Neutrogena Body Clear Body, and the list goes on.

How Does Salicylic Acid Work?

One of the reasons acne occurs is from over-active skin cell shedding, from within the pore walls. What this can cause is plugged pores, which is the perfect recipe for acne. Salicylic Acid works by breaking down comedones (oil and skin cells that plug up pores) while at the same time slowing down the excess skill cell shedding.

Salicylic Acid Side Effects

While Salicylic Acid is a fairly mild medicinal ingredient that is usually used in fairly low doses, it can still sometimes cause burning, redness and peeling in odd cases. If this occurs, notify your doctor immediately and discuss other acne treatments
